Social Justice News!
This Christmas Season the Social Justice Team is offering a Giving Tree
The tree has decorations with wish list items from three local charities - The Warming Center, Haven and the Help Center.
The Warming Center (open from Nov. 1st through Mar. 31st) is in it's 9th season of offering shelter to homeless people in the winter. The past several years the need at the Warming Center has increased about 20% each year but last year the need increased by 33%. To accommodate this increase the staff was doubled this year and families and single women are being sheltered at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Durston. The Warming Center is a program of HRDC and a new shelter is being planned. HRDC has purchased land on Griffin between north 7th and Rouse and it is currently raising money to pay off the land and build the new shelter. The future shelter will be year-round with a resource hub (e.g. mental health counseling) above the shelter. The Food Bank will also be in this building.
Haven is committed to reducing the incidence and minimizing the impact of domestic abuse on families and communities. Haven provides emergency shelter, crisis intervention, on-going support, referrals and education. Haven's services are for any victim or survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. They include offering an emergency shelter, 24 hour support line, legal advocacy, adult support group, kid's group, individual counseling and community education.
Help Center started as a Crisis Hotline in the 1970's. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help individuals and families sort out problems, deal with feelings and make decisions. The Help Center accepts calls from people with issues ranging from suicidality, depression/anxiety to relationship/family problems and makes referrals. The center also provides sexual assault and suicide outreach as well as follow up counseling and referral. The center is part of the Child Advocacy Center of Gallatin County - which focuses on child abuse. Hearts and Homes is a Help Center program that offers support services to families who have children in foster, kinship or dual custody care.
Please place your gifts in the decorated box in the Narthex. Thank you!
